The initial consultation
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What is an initial consultation?
What questions are clarified and what do I need to know?
What do I need to bring to an initial consultation?

The initial consultation in psychotherapy represents an important milestone in the treatment process and is the first encounter between patient and therapist. Typically lasting about 50 minutes, it has a clarifying and advisory character. During this time, various aspects are illuminated to establish a comprehensive foundation for further therapy.

At the beginning of the initial session, the focus is on clarifying symptoms and complaints. The therapist assesses the patient's current situation as well as their resources and supportive circumstances. Through this analysis, possible causes and connections can be better understood.

Another important step is the development of a treatment plan and therapy planning. Goals for therapy are set together with the patient, and desires for the course of treatment are formulated. An overview of the patient's current situation is also created to define a clear starting point for treatment.

The question of the indication for psychotherapy also plays a central role in the initial session. Here, it is decided whether psychotherapy is suitable for the patient and which setting and treatment method are best suited. It is also discussed whether further accompanying or supportive measures are necessary, and whether an internist or specialist evaluation of any somatic symptoms is required.

In addition to diagnostic questions, administrative matters are also clarified during the initial session. These include scheduling further sessions as well as questions about financing the therapy.

It is important to emphasize that psychotherapy is typically a long process that requires time, commitment, and patience. The initial session lays the groundwork for this process and forms the basis for a successful collaboration between therapist and patient.
